Spain 1-0 Germany (AET)

Aitana Bonmati fired Spain into their first-ever UEFA Women’s European Championship final with a dramatic extra-time winner against Germany, sealing a 1-0 victory in Basel on Wednesday night.

In a fiercely contested semi-final, it took 113 minutes for the deadlock to break. Bonmati, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner and one of Spain’s standout performers, beat German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger at her near post from a tight angle—sending Spain to a showdown with England on Sunday.

It was a bitter exit for Germany, who were knocked out at the semi-final stage for the first time since 1997. The eight-time European champions threw everything at Spain, particularly through Klara Bühl, but could not convert their chances. Spain’s keeper Cata Coll was instrumental, producing crucial saves to deny Bühl, Carlotta Wamser, and others, including a stunning last-second block to force extra time.

Despite a flurry of Spanish chances—Mariona Caldentey, Esther González, and Claudia Pina all going close—Berger kept Germany alive until Bonmati’s breakthrough sealed it. The goal marked Spain’s first ever win over Germany in competitive play, ending a run of five losses and three draws.

“We work every day for these kinds of moments,” Bonmati told UEFA.com after the match. “We’ve never made it to the Euro final before, but today we made history again. We’ll try to make more history on Sunday.”

Spain now face defending champions England in a blockbuster final—an exact rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, where La Roja emerged victorious by the same 1-0 scoreline.

Germany head coach Christian Wück praised his players’ efforts but admitted the result exposed areas for improvement.

“Very few people thought we’d make the semis,” he said. “Until the final minutes, we played so well Spain couldn’t beat us. But we need more quality in possession and to take our chances. Congratulations to Spain—they showed their class.”

The final kicks off Sunday in Basel, with Spain aiming to complete a historic double and England looking to retain their crown.
