Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has called on new manager Ruben Amorim to keep Rasmus Hojlund at Old Trafford, even after the club’s £74m capture of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.
Sesko’s arrival has sparked speculation over Hojlund’s future, with AC Milan reportedly circling. But Berbatov believes the competition could benefit the 22-year-old, pushing him to fight for his place.
“I’m excited to see Sesko at United, but I’m cautious,” Berbatov told The Mirror. “Players like Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee came from clubs where they were scoring and dominating defenders, but the Premier League is a different challenge. Last season, Hojlund scored just four league goals, and Zirkzee three — for a No. 9 at United, that’s not enough. Still, a new striker coming in can go two ways: you either think about leaving, or you take it as a challenge and bring the fire.”
United’s struggles in front of goal have been well-documented, but alongside Sesko, the summer arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are expected to add much-needed firepower. Berbatov insists Hojlund can still be part of the solution — but Amorim must make him feel valued.
“As a striker, you need to feel wanted by the coach and the team,” he said. “That belief can lift your confidence and push you to perform. It’s all in the head.”
Hojlund will get another chance to impress when United face Fiorentina in their final pre-season match before the Premier League kicks off next weekend.
